Racehorse Retirement Programme

Graham had a successful career as a lead driver in the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery, a British Horse Society Inspector, National Championship level competitor/trainer and dressage judge. Together with his partner Sue, who had successfully managed a thriving high class livery yard and successfully competed in all three disciplines, in 1999 they created The Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre. This venture grew rapidly under their guidance with over 100 horses successfully re-homed and a reputation established that was second to none; but Graham and Sue wanted to establish a facility to tend not only those horses that are straight forward and easy to re-home, but those more complicated or injured but who still deserve a second chance - and 2006 created the Racehorse Sanctuary and Re-Homing Centre and to a degree achieved this.

In 2021 both Graham and Sue have made the decision to narrow down their ambitions and concentrate on those horses who have finished their careers in racing though no fault of their own due to physical/psychological injury or quite simply not being fast enough and can no longer be ridden, in doing so have created the Racehorse Retirement Programme at their own cost rather than being a registered charity allowing them to concentrate on the horses alone.

Working in conjunction with RoR The Racehorse Retirement Programme is 100% for those horses who are happy and healthy but for whatever reason can no longer carry a weight on their backs, in our experience, these horses are often still able to lead happy and productive lives and the“Non-riding Thoroughbred” has so much to offer. We do also cater for riding horses of any age. If you own such a former horse we encourage you to contact us to discuss the possible options open to him/her.

We actively seek out potential homes for these horses carrying out in person inspections of the facilities and assessing the experience and capabilities of potential loanee's.

Once we have placed in a loan home we continue to monitor the wellbeing of that horse for the rest of its life through regular visits which are carried out by one of our team of Field Officers. Help and advice is at hand 24/7 for any challenges loanee's may have.

If you feel that you have the experience, the facilities, the finances and passion to offer a forever home to one of these beautiful horses please contact Graham 07710 904189 to discuss, good homes with good people are always in need.
